Cases of word usage

1) a part of a wall set back from the rest, often with a bed or seats (alcove)

2) the low wall round a tower or castle with openings through which to shoot (battlements)

3) a support on a wall for a shelf etc (bracket)

4) a strong wall built against attack (bulwark)

5) a support build against a wall (buttress)

6) a covered walk, usually on the sides of an open courtyard, with a wall on the outer side and columns or arches on the inner side (cloister)

7) a line of stonework or bricks on top of a wall (coping)

8) a small crack or opening e.g. in a wall (cranny)

9) a wall of earth, stone etc built to hold back water, to support a road or railway (embankment)

10) an ornamental band or strip along (usually the top of) a wall (frieze)
