Cases of word usage
1) a person who one knows but not as well as a friend (acquaintance)
2) next (to a person, thing); near (to a person, thing) but not necessarily touching (adjacent)
3) a person who has tried (a career etc) but failed to do well (also-ran)
4) a person but no particular or known one (anybody)
5) an event or object but no particular or known one (anything)
6) (of a person, behaviour) rough but honest and kind (bluff)
7) (e.g. ice, glass) hard but easily broken (brittle)
8) an injury made by a blow or knock to the body or to a fruit, so that the skin is blue etc but not broken (bruise)
9) a person standing near but not taking part in an event or activity (bystander)
10) (of a horse) a pace faster than a trot but slower than a gallop; period of riding at such a pace (canter)
